Happy Holidays to our wonderful Brinker Community! As the year comes to a close and the school year marks the halfway point, the Brinker PTA would like to thank each and every member for their contributions small and large. Everything from the simple act of becoming a Brinker PTA member, volunteering for one of our events or taking on larger roles as Board and Chairs, we recognize you during this season of celebration.
The following are some of our amazing volunteering opportunities and events from November:
• Field Day • Book Fair & Family Night • Colonial Day • Author Visit • Cafeteria Cops • Canned Food Drive • Red Ribbon Week and the Mavs Man • 31 Reflections Entries
Coming in December:
• Gently-Used Book Drive • Winter Parties • Texas Heroes in History
I wish you and your families a very Happy and Healthy Holiday, a restful Winter Break and a Happy New Year!

NOVEMBER TUESDAY TUNES PERFORMERS
We are proud to recognize our November Tuesday Tunes performers from the talented Zuckerman family! Many thanks to 5th grade pianist Zachary Zuckerman, 4th grade pianist Sitaara Zuckerman and 2nd grade pianist Kalel Zuckerman for sharing their beautiful music with us.
If your student musician would like to showcase their talents in an informal setting on Tuesday mornings, please register on the Brinker Toolkit. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you have questions.
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH - CHRIS ORTIZ
Congratulations to Chris Ortiz our Brinker PTA Volunteer of the Month! Chris' daughter, Lilah, is in Kindergarten in Miss Presson's class. Chris enjoys volunteering so that he can be active in her education and get to know the teachers and other parents in the school. He was a huge help with Book Fair and regularly volunteers in Kindergarten lunch. "I like to help in the lunch room as it allows me time to spend with Lilah and see how she is with all her friends!" Chris works for Capital One in Technology and loves his job! They have 2 Miniature Schnauzers, Merlin and Rayven, who also take up a lot of his time. Outside of work and volunteering, they enjoy their annual trip to Disney World!!
Thank you Chris for all of your contributions to Brinker and the PTA!
RED RIBBON WEEK
Our Brinker Bears enjoyed celebrating Red Ribbon Week this year. From dressing up in various themes, to receiving drug-free message stickers and bookmarks, and finally ending the week with a visit from the Dallas Mavericks MavsMan and Champ. They were a big hit with their action-packed dunk show and “JUST SAY NO” message.
Thank you for supporting the Brinker PTA. Your membership and donations allow us to host performances like these at our school.
BOOK FAIR: Yeehaw!
We had another near record breaking book fair. The kids had a blast meeting Clifford, the Plano West Royales and football players at family night! A BIG thank you goes out to all of the numerous volunteers who gave their time to help set up, run and break down the book fair. We appreciate the help from each and every one of you. We are looking forward to another great book fair in the spring!
On the last day of November our 5th graders enjoyed an annual student-favorite: Colonial Day. Students were invited to dress up in Colonial attire for the day and then experience various activities of Colonial America. Each student was provided with knitting needles and yarn and were taught how to knit. Colonial era games (no electronics!) such as hop scotch, marbles and jacks were played. Students learned how and why Colonial residents decorated with punched tin and then created some tin-punch art of their own. They mixed and cooked their own Johnny cakes and made their own butter to eat with them. Last, but not least, the students experienced the strict discipline of a Colonial one-room schoolhouse, using their pen nubs to write their lessons on horn books with dipped ink. It is experiential learning at it best! Many thanks to all of the parents who made the day such a wonderful success: Hollie Carlson, Donna Dulin, Julie Chisum, Shelley Lowe, Kim Fischer, Jennifer Fink, Erin Wasson, Carey Graff, Julie Pascuzzi, Laila Jiwani, Darren Horowirz, Hema Kalyandurg, Anita Dewers, Nelsy Mele, Debbie Lewis, Nandini Nanda, Shannon Ansel, and Carla Szperling.
BRINKER CANNED FOOD DRIVE
Thank you Brinker families for your tremendous support! It is amazing what can happen when the community comes together. This year’s canned food drive was a HUGE success in collecting over 3200 canned food items. This amount of cans will provide 2735 meals for the community!
We set the bar high for ourselves and for exceeding our goal of 3,100 cans, each student will receive prizes from Pinstack, Menchie's and Chick-fil-a. We want to send a huge thank you to these community partners for their generous donations. Please make sure to visit them over the holiday break. Again, thank you Brinker families for your support and making the holiday a bit easier for those in need.
Thank you for supporting the Brinker PTA by donating to the 2017-2018 B.E.A.R.S. Campaign. Every donation goes directly to support our Brinker students by providing high quality activities, programs, and resources to enrich the school year. Thank you again for your generous support.
To help students celebrate Thanksgiving during the school week before break, the PTA brought back the Plano Police Crime Prevention team to do their Cafeteria Cops program during the lunch hour. It was a HUGE success! Kids enjoyed their lunch hour with singing and dancing in the cafeteria. This crime prevention program helps police build relationships with elementary students, as well as giving them respect and appreciation for the police officers who keep our neighborhoods safe.
BRINKER FIFTH GRADERS ENJOYED WONDER MOVIE
On November 17th Brinker Fifth graders were able to attend the Opening Day of the “Wonder” movie at our local Cinemark Theaters. The students had just finished reading the “Wonder” novel in class which was a recent Texas Bluebonnet Award winner. This wonderful novel and movie has inspired the Choose Kind Movement. After the movie the students and teachers engaged in meaningful conversations about empathy, friendships, character, and kindness. Thank you Brinker PTA for providing this local fieldtrip for our Fifth grade students!

V.I.P. TUTORS NEEDED
Brinker would like to invite you to become a Very Important Partner (VIP) Tutor. Our VIP Program is an awesome, fun way for parents, and even grandparents or community members, to volunteer and help our Brinker students directly. You commit half an hour a week to assist a student who needs a little extra support in math and/or reading, as well as boosting the student’s confidence in their academics. If you choose to sign up to volunteer, you will submit your available days and times you can be at Brinker to tutor within the school day. The information will be given to Mrs. Stelzl, Brinker’s Reading Specialist, and you will be paired up with a student. You may also select whether you prefer to work with the younger grades or older grades, and whether you prefer to tutor in reading or math.
You do not need to be a teacher or a former teacher to be able to tutor. The students’ teachers will provide you with the provide assignments and information for each tutoring session. If you are curious or even a little interested, please give me the opportunity to talk to you about it. Please e-mail Jennifer Blice at firstname.lastname@example.org. The VIP program is a very rewarding way to help Brinker students. There is a great need for tutors, especially during the second semester. Tutoring begins in October as soon as we can assign students to volunteers, and runs through the beginning of May.

TIME TO KEEP READING
Keep reading! Keep your students engaged this year by reading books from the Texas 2x2 Reading List and Texas Bluebonnet Awards. These award-winning books can be found at our local public libraries. Click on the links below for each reading list:
In support of these Texas reading programs and the extra efforts of our Brinker students, Brinker PTA recognizes 3rd-5th grade students who read at least 10 books from the Bluebonnet list and Kindergarten–2nd grade students who read at least 15 books from the 2x2 list. The students who read the books and turn in their reading logs by the deadline will be invited to attend a pizza & ice cream party in the spring after school at Brinker.
A reading log will provided to your child by the librarian at the beginning of the year and can also be found at the links above. If interested, have your child read the books on the reading list and keep track on the reading log and turn in their log by the Spring deadline (tbd). Happy Reading!
The Brinker Elementary PTA is excited to once again be supporting the Brinker Marathoners Club. The Brinker Marathoners Club was created by the PE coaching team to encourage students to continue to make healthy and active choices. This year, however, students will only be able to earn miles during PE class. Miles accumulated will continue to be rewarded with toe tokens at different distances and with our, newly designed, 26.2 mile t-shirt. Students have already started to record their miles. Way to go Brinker students!
