Welcome, Welcome, Welcome Back to all our Brinker families, teachers and staff! Summer 2017 is now in the rearview mirror and the school bus is headed back to Brinker.
I am Alison Grzyb, and am excited to be serving the Brinker Community as PTA President for the 2017-2018 school year. My daughters are Holly, a current 4th grade Brinker Bear, and Sophie, a freshman Shepton Stallion. I have been an active member of our PTA for 10 years and have loved every minute volunteering and participating in our many program and events such as Field Day, Color Fun Run, Fall Family Picnic, Author Visits, Scientists Visits, Tuesday Tunes, Chess Club, & new this year Robotics to name just a few. No matter your interests, Brinker is “bursting” with opportunities for everyone.
As we start this new school year, I ask you to be an active part of our Brinker Community. The community around you and your children at Brinker will provide you with knowledge, support, friendship and will make the years at Brinker great ones!
The easiest ways to be apart of the Brinker Community and “In the Know” is to join the Brinker PTA. Letter from our principal - Barbara Lange
I look forward to the start of each new year with much anticipation, as I know that each of you do as well. We start preparing for the next year even before the current year is over, and we think about ways in which we can better grow ourselves as professionals so that we can better grow our students. We have invested heavily in Social Emotional Learning, and we will continue building on that for the upcoming school year. The beginning of the year will be spent on building relationships and classroom communities. We have also been working hard to have a plan for those students who come in new throughout the school year.
PTA has agreed to help us by reaching out to new parents to offer assistance in answering questions and to just be a friendly face in the school community. We are excited about this because we value our parents in working with us and supporting education.
We have established a Social Emotional library area, and have been stocking it with books for students to read – a way to deal with the day to day situations that may arise. We will continue to build on this area of the library as new books are published. Our counselors will be forming small groups throughout the year for specific situations such as a recent divorce, death in the family, making new friends, and just being a new student in a new environment.
We have some new staff this year, and we are so excited about all of the amazing talent coming onto our staff. Our new Librarian will be Pattie Pearson from Frisco ISD. We have two new Kindergarten teachers – Avery Meyer, a former Brinker Bear; and Peyton Presson, who has been teaching in Lubbock! In First Grade will be Mandee Piper, a recent grad from Baylor. In Third Grade, Katelyn Schroeder, a recent grad from UNT and a regular substitute last spring at Brinker. We also have a part time counselor, Megan Kinser, who is coming to us from another PISD campus. Two staff changes to share are: Tracie Bailey moving from Third to Fifth, and Meagan Krueter will be our new ESL teacher. We are very excited to have these staff members in a new role! We said goodbye to these staff members: Connie Wiggins, Tara Stoller, Maddie Ziegler, Sloan Thompson, Amy Chilcutt, Cherri Miller, and Michelle Schuler. We wish them all the best in their new ventures!
Please be sure you have gone into Parent Portal to update your information – you want to be sure to get your teacher’s name for your child on August 16! Be in the loop on all the goings on at Brinker by joining PTA – our members are the best supporters of our school, and there are many ways to get plugged in at our school.
Looking forward to seeing you real soon! Barbara Lange

Only Members of the PTA will receive a Student Directory.
If you are looking for a great way to help out directly in your child's classroom please consider volunteering for homeroom or lead homeroom representative. B.E.A.R.S. Campaign/Yard Sign Campaign
(Benefactors for Educators, Academic Resources and Students)
Each year, your PTA raises money to support programs that directly impact each and every student at Brinker Elementary. The Brinker PTA spends almost $20,000 annually on Arts in Education Curriculum and Academic Enrichment Programs such as author visits, theater presentations, field trips, and professional scientists conducting in-classroom experiments.
Donations to the B.E.A.R.S. Campaign can be made in any amount. Families who donate $100 to $249 will receive a Brinker yard sign and families donating more than $250 will receive a yard sign and the PTA will donate 5 books to the library in that family's name. Each donation makes a positive impact for our Brinker students and families will be recognized in an upcoming Brinker Newsletter.
Donations can be made on the PTA Membership Toolkit. Click here and go to the Orders/Volunteering tab and select the 2017-2018 B.E.A.R.S. Campaign form.
Our goal this year is to get support for our PTA programs from 100% of our Brinker families. No donation is too small. What does the 100% campaign mean?
- 100% participation from Brinker families - 100% of your money goes straight to Brinker PTA; therefore, straight to your child - 100% tax deductible donations - 100% less time fundraising - 100% fewer calories consumed than cookie dough - 100% fewer items cluttering your household
To log on to the Brinker PTA Membership Toolkit, click here and donate now. Donations can be made to the B.E.A.R.S. Campaign under the Orders/Volunteering tab. For cash and check donations, please contact Anita Dewers at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Let's get that 100%.
More than 1,000 companies in the U.S. have matching gift programs. This means if the employee makes a donation to a charitable 501(c)(3) organization, such as Brinker PTA, the employer will match that donation. This can dramatically increase the impact your gift makes for the Brinker PTA.
Check with your company’s Human Resources Department to see if your company offers this benefit. For more information on matching gifts, visit our B.E.A.R.S. Campaign page. For questions, please contact Anita Dewers at email@example.com.

PISD VOLUNTEER APPLICATIONS
Have you completed your Volunteer Application for the 2017-18 school year? PISD requires all volunteers to complete this application EVERY school year. We encourage ALL parents to complete and submit an application for security clearance - if you are one of our volunteers or just planning to attend a classroom party. Please visit the PISD Volunteer Application page to access the online application - it takes about 5 minutes to complete.
Click here to go to the PISD Volunteer Application page or here to go to directly to the application.
Our VIP Program is an awesome, fun way for parents, grandparents or community members, to volunteer and help our Brinker students directly. You commit half an hour a week to assist a student who needs a little extra support in math and/or reading, as well as boosting the student’s confidence in their academics. If you choose to sign up to volunteer, you will submit your available days and times you can be at Brinker to tutor during school hours. You will be paired with a student or may also select whether you prefer to work with the younger or older grades and if you prefer to tutor in reading or math.
You do not need to be a teacher or a former teacher to be able to tutor. The students’ teachers will provide you with the assignments and information for each tutoring session. If interested, please e-mail Emily Chapman at email@example.com. There is a great need for tutors, especially during the second semester.
Please note that with any volunteer position in Plano ISD, a volunteer form and background check must be completed prior to beginning that position. This can be completed by going to www.pisd.edu/volunteer. There is also a short, required training session to insure you are comfortable with what is being asked of you. Tutoring begins in October and runs through the beginning of May.
The Brinker PTA will once again be sponsoring an after-school chess enrichment program starting September 7th. This 8 week program takes place on Thursdays from 4 PM-5:15 PM at the Brinker Library. All skill and grade levels are welcome! Learn more about the program at Back to Brinker. Registration is $180 per student and is opening soon on the Membership Toolkit. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
Brinker Elementary PTA encourages all students to express themselves and explore their talents through the National PTA Reflections Program. Reflections is PTA’s cornerstone arts program. Each year, students in Grades Pre-K through 12 are recognized for bringing the theme to life through: • Dance choreography • Film production • Literature • Music composition • Photography • Visual arts
The theme for 2017-2018 is “Within Reach”. Use your imagination to create a film, song, artwork, photograph, poem, short story or dance routine. Refer to the flyer for more information.
Every year the Texas Library Association selects a number of books to be nominated for the Texas Bluebonnet Award and for the 2x2 reading list. A new list of books is released each year at the Texas Book Festival. These lists will be announced by flyer during the first month of school at Brinker and all of these books can be found in our Brinker Library, at the local public library and also can be requested online through the Plano library website www.planolibrary.org and held if you have difficulty finding them on the shelves.
Brinker PTA recognizes 3rd - 5th grade students who read at least 10 books from the Bluebonnet list and Kindergarten – 2nd grade students who read at least 15 books from the 2x2 list. Students who read the books and turn in their reading logs by the deadline will be recognized and rewarded in the Spring after school at Brinker.
