Happy February! Thank you to all the “father figures” who brought their Brinker Bears to Brinker PTA’s “Movie Night with Dad” last month in the gym. We hope you had fun and met some other Brinker parents. I think it was our best attended to date. A special “Thanks” to Lisa Birenbaum and Shawn Zuckerman for organizing a great community event. Also, thanks to Shelley Prowell, Pinstack and Cinemark for the delicious popcorn and treats.
If you missed that event, please mark your calendars because our Spring Book Fair is February 6-10. We will have our ever popular “Book Fair Family Night” on Wednesday, Feb 8 from 6-8pm. Come stock up on books and have fun with friends.
Also, on February 8 at 6:30pm is our second Brinker PTA General Meeting of the school year in the Brinker Gym. Please join us for this General Meeting as we need our PTA members to nominate and to vote on our Nominating Committee. The 5-member (and 2 alternate) Nominating Committee will be the PTA members who will determine who will serve on our 2017-18 PTA Executive Board (President, 1st VP – Communications, 2nd VP-Volunteers, 3rd VP – Ways & Means, Secretary and Treasurer). We need PTA members to attend the meeting and help choose those to serve on this important committee. Please join us!
If your students and your family have been enjoying all the events, programs and activities that the Brinker PTA provides each year, please consider serving as one of Board and Chairs for the 2017-18 school year. We have roles that will work with every type of life situation whether you work full-time, part-time, work from home, have little ones still at home, have limited transportation or have a very flexible schedule and want to get more involved at Brinker. Please review the Brinker PTA’s Board and Chairs Interest Form and let us know what “interests” you. Please feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org to ask any questions. You will be amazed at the friends you will make and how connected to will feel to Brinker by volunteering.
Wishing you a month of sweetness and joy with your Valentines!
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH: CARLA SZPERLING
Congratulations to Carla Szperling, our Brinker PTA Volunteer of the Month. Carla has 2 sons at Brinker. Marcelo is in the 4th grade & Leo is in the 2nd grade.
Carla is one of the main volunteers in the Teacher Workroom, and she can be found working behind the scenes several times a week. Carla helps tremendously preparing assignments and projects needed for the students. Carla's help allows the teachers to focus more of their attention and time with the students.
The Brinker staff and the PTA are extremely appreciative of Carla's help. Please congratulate Carla when you see her!
TUESDAY TUNES: JANUARY PERFORMERS
Thank you Tanvi Joshi & Kayden Zhong for sharing your beautiful music with us this February and making our Tuesday morning so special.
Benefits of Playing Musical Instruments: Coordination
Making beautiful, balanced sounds on a musical instrument requires well-developed hand-eye coordination, as well as heightened fine and gross motor skills. Experts claim that music making actually can physically change motor areas in the brain. Acquired motor skills can easily transfer to other pursuits in life, for example handwork, hobbies, and even sports.

AUTHOR VISITFEBRUARY 23
Brinker PTA is excited to announce that Nancy Churnin will be speaking to our 3–5 graders on February 23. Nancy, theater critic for The Dallas Morning News, will share the amazing true story of William Hoy, the great 19th century deaf baseball player who introduced signals so he could play the game he loved -- the same signs we use today! She will introduce the kids to what life was like for a little boy born when Abraham Lincoln was president, read her book, The William Hoy Story, which was recently selected by the Texas Librarians Association for the prestigious 2017 2X2 list of recommended books, teach the children a few words in sign language, answer questions, encourage kids to write letters to get Hoy into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and sign any books that the children bring for autographs. She will also tell them a little about her next true picture book, Manjhi Moves a Mountain, which takes place in India, and comes out in September.
Please consider purchasing her book in advance using the links below so that your students can bring them to school for an autograph on February 23.
Have you completed your Volunteer Application for the 2015-16 school year? PISD requires all volunteers to complete this application EVERY school year. We encourage ALL parents to complete and submit an application for security clearance - if you are one of our volunteers or just planning to attend a classroom party. Please visit the PISD Volunteer Application page to access the online application - it takes about 5 minutes to complete.

Thanks for volunteering!
WORKROOM HELP NEEDED
If you can count to 28, use a paper cutter, tear out pages from a workbook and staple, then the Brinker Workroom needs you! We need at least 4-5 volunteers each week to help our teachers with behind the scenes work. This time will be spent on work assignments and projects for all grade levels, including PACE and Special Education.
All instructions and supplies are provided. The Brinker Workroom is located inside the library and is available each week, Tuesday through Friday (7:30am-2:45pm). To volunteer, go to the Orders/Volunteering tab on the PTAMembership Toolkitand look for the Teacher Workroom volunteer form.
This is a great opportunity to see what our children are learning and give a helping hand to our wonderful teachers! If you have any questions, please contact Ritu Narayan at email@example.com.
LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We have lots of openings for the spring library volunteer schedule. Volunteer timeslots cover 1-2 classes, and you would be helping to check-in/check-out and shelve books. It’s a great way to see your child at school! A few of our timeslots are completely full, but others have some days with no volunteers at all. Library volunteers needed for:

WE NEED V.I.P. TUTORS
Brinker would like to invite you to become a Very Important Partner (VIP) Tutor. VIP tutoring is an opportunity to work one-on-one with a Brinker student who needs a little extra help in math and/or reading. It’s a great way to give back to the Brinker community and meet some wonderful kids. No formal teaching experience is required. We just ask that you complete a background check, and make a commitment of 30 minutes per week on a day/time of your choosing. If you work close by, please consider coming in during your lunch hour. This is also a great opportunity for grandparents to get involved at Brinker. I will meet with you prior to you starting tutoring to show you where the VIP tutoring supplies are, and how the half hour of tutoring works. There are only about ten weeks left of VIP tutoring for this school year. The VIP program for this school year ends April 28.
More students are identified as needing extra help in the second semester. Right now, we do not have enough volunteers for the number of students needing extra support. The need is great and our teachers welcome the extra help. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Jennifer Blice at VIPtutors@brinkerpta.org.
TIME TO KEEP READING
Remind your students to keep reading books from the Texas 2x2 Reading List & Texas Bluebonnet Awards. These award-winning books can be found at our local public libraries. Click on the links below for each reading list:
In support of these Texas reading programs and the extra efforts of our Brinker students, Brinker PTA recognizes 3rd-5th grade students who read at least 10 books from the Bluebonnet list and Kindergarten–2nd grade students who read at least 15 books from the 2x2 list. The students who read the books and turn in their reading logs by March 14 will be invited to attend a pizza & ice cream party in the spring after school at Brinker. The K-2nd grade party will be held after school on Tuesday, March 21 and the 3-5 grade party will be held after school on Thursday, March 23.
A reading log has been provided to your child by the librarian at the beginning of the year and can also be found at the links above. If interested, have your child read the books on the reading list and keep track on the reading log and turn in their log by March 14. Happy Reading!
