It’s FINALLY Fall, Y’all! (well the Texas kind…) It was so great to see so many families attend and get to know each other at our annual Fall Family Picnic on September 30. This is always such a fun event sponsored by your Brinker PTA for our Brinker Community! We have many more PTA-sponsored activities this month.
On October 5, take advantage of the cool, beautiful mornings and join your neighbors on “International Walk to School Day.” Also, at 6:30pm that evening bring your families out to Yeary Road (between Clark & Willow Bend) to watch the annual Plano West Homecoming Parade and support the Plano West Wolves in our Blue Nation. Plano West’s Homecoming Football game is Friday, October 7 and the Homecoming Parade helps kick off the celebration.
Brinker PTA helps support our PE Staff by putting on Brinker Field Day on October 21. Come out, volunteer and watch our students have a blast on all the Field Day games and Obstacle Course, which is a new additional this year!!
We are also treating our wonderful and hard-working Brinker Staff to a yummy breakfast on October 21 to let them know how much we appreciate them!
Finally, to finish out this busy October, Brinker students will participate in Red Ribbon Week during October 24-28. To help reinforce the important messages about making healthy life choices, the Brinker PTA is bringing Nancy Worchester, the hilarious and entertaining ventriloquist on October 28.
Enjoy this busy and beautiful October and I hope to run into you soon.
SEPTEMBER TUESDAY TUNES PERFORMERS
We are proud to recognize our September performers, Henry Arnold, Kayden Zhong and Amelia Nugent, who opened the new Tuesday Tunes season. Thank you for sharing your beautiful music right at the start of the school year, as we know it takes some extra effort. You all had exceptional performances!
Starting this month, we invite everyone to take part in a conversation on how children can benefit from learning to play musical instruments. Let us know how it has helped your student. Confidence, social skills, happiness, patience, spatial awareness are just a few of the benefits we are planning to discuss. Please send comments to firstname.lastname@example.org
Benefits of Playing Musical Instruments: Confidence
Building confidence is a very important skill that gets developed while learning to play musical instruments. Confidence grows naturally with the sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering a complex skill and receiving recognition. Hearing the audience erupt in applause after a stellar performance would boost anyone's self-esteem. But we should bear in mind that getting onto the stage already requires a lot of nerve, and it is something that every young musician must learn how to accomplish. Overcoming "stage fright" and "cold feet" takes practice and requires stepping out your comfort zone, as well as maintaining positive thinking. Young musicians also learn that being well-prepared for an event and dressing appropriately also have a positive effect on self-confidence. All this experience comes in handy in many other life situations!
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH - SHAWN ZUCKERMAN

WALK TO SCHOOL DAYOCTOBER 5
International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record breaking participation – each October. Today, thousands of schools across America participate every October.
Be sure to mark your calendars and participate in the fun.
BEARS CAMPAIGN DEADLINEOCTOBER 7
Deadline is October 7 to get your NEWLY DESIGNED BRINKER YARD SIGN!
Each year, your PTA raises money to support programs that directly impact each and every student at Brinker Elementary. Brinker PTA spends almost $20,000 annually on Arts in Education curriculum & Academic Enrichment Programs, such as author visits, field trips, and professional scientists conducting in-classroom experiments.
These things could not take place without our faithful and dedicated PTA. I am asking that we forgo the traditional product sales fundraisers and instead, donate through B.E.A.R.S. We would love everybody to participate in order to raise enough money to do this.
Donations can be made in any amount. Families who donate $100-$249 will receive a Brinker yard sign and families donating more than $250 will receive a yard sign and the PTA will donate 5 books to the library in that family's name.
Donations can be made on theToolkitby logging in, going to the Orders/Volunteering tab and selecting the 2016-2017 BEARS Campaign form. For cash and check donations, please contact Jill Levy email@example.com. Donate now!

BRINKER TEACHERS NEED YOUR HELP
One of the easy and flexible ways to volunteer at Brinker is in our Teacher Workroom. Every week, our teachers could use extra hands to help behind the scenes, preparing assignments and projects for their classes. Brinker volunteers can help by taking some of these additional tasks off of our teachers. The Teacher Workroom is currently in need of many more volunteers to keep up with the requests. We need at least 4-5 volunteers each week to help our teachers with this work.
If you can count to 28, use a paper cutter, tear out pages from a workbook and staple, then the Brinker Workroom needs you! This time will be spent on work assignments and projects for all grade levels, including PACE and Special Education. Some projects can even be done at home. All instructions and supplies are provided. The Brinker Workroom is located inside the library and is available each week, Tuesday through Friday (7:30am-2:45pm). To volunteer, go to the Orders/Volunteering tab on the Toolkit and look for the Teacher Workroom volunteer form. You can choose dates that work with your personal schedules.
This is a great opportunity to see what our children are learning and give a helping hand to our wonderful teachers! The Brinker staff is so appreciative of this extra help! If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Hema Kalyandurg firstname.lastname@example.org
LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We have lots of openings for the fall library volunteer schedule. Volunteer timeslots cover 1-2 classes, and you would be helping to check-in/check-out and shelve books. It’s a great way to see your child at school! A few of our timeslots are completely full, but others have some days with no volunteers at all.
You can sign up on by clicking HERE to find the 2016-2017 Library Volunteer form. For any questions, please e-mail Shaheen Salam at email@example.com.
V.I.P. TUTORS NEEDED
Brinker would like to invite you to become a Very Important Partner (VIP) Tutor. Our VIP Program is an awesome, fun way for parents, and even grandparents or community members, to volunteer and help our Brinker students directly. You commit half an hour a week to assist a student who needs a little extra support in math and/or reading, as well as boosting the student’s confidence in their academics. If you choose to sign up to volunteer, you will submit your available days and times you can be at Brinker to tutor within the school day. The information will be given to Mrs. Stelzl, Brinker’s Reading Specialist, and you will be paired up with a student. You may also select whether you prefer to work with the younger grades or older grades, and whether you prefer to tutor in reading or math.
You do not need to be a teacher or a former teacher to be able to tutor. The students’ teachers will provide you with the provide assignments and information for each tutoring session. If you are curious or even a little interested, please give me the opportunity to talk to you about it. Please e-mail Jennifer Blice at firstname.lastname@example.org. The VIP program is a very rewarding way to help Brinker students. There is a great need for tutors, especially during the second semester. Tutoring begins in October as soon as we can assign students to volunteers, and runs through the beginning of May.
