I’m hoping that everyone made it through the rampant illnesses of February and ready for a fresh and healthy start in March. Texas weather is warmer, the days last longer, and the plants and trees begin to bloom. To celebrate, I hope you will join us on Friday, March 17 (aka St. Patrick’s Day) for some “sprinkling of the green” from 5-6pm in the Brinker parking lot for our 2nd Annual Brinker Color Fun Run.
Like our Brinker Family Picnic in September, the Brinker Color Fun Run is a PTA-sponsored event for our Brinker students and families. What a great way to spend a Spring evening than cheering on our Brinker Bears as they have a blast running laps while being sprinkled with green powder! This event is promoting healthy lifestyles for our kids, as well as giving families the opportunity to socialize and build our community. Sign up your student(s) for the Color Fun Run here today!
Finally, if you are doing some “spring cleaning” please consider donating your gently used clothes, shoes, sheets, backpacks to the blue World Wide Wear container which is located behind Brinker near the small playground. Our PTA receives money for each pound of donations and it adds up to several hundred dollars each year.
Have a wonderful Spring Break!
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH: CRISSY PETERS
Congratulations to Crissy Peters, our Brinker PTA volunteer of the month! The Peters family is new to Brinker, and Crissy quickly became an active PTA volunteer. Crissy has twins in Kindergarten, a daughter in the fourth grade, and another child at Renner.
Crissy helped tremendously at the Spring Book Fair by volunteering for several shifts throughout the week and helping the students select their favorite books. She is also involved with the Kindergarten Reading Buddies program and is a Kindergarten Lunch Helper. The Brinker staff, students, and PTA appreciate your help. Thank you and congratulations Crissy!
TUESDAY TUNES: FEBRUARY PERFORMERS
Thank you Ethan Zhang, Kayden Zhong, and Liam Seaward for your uplifting music performed during January and February. You made our Tuesday mornings so special.
Benefits of Playing Musical Instruments: Brain Development
It is known that making music can physically change our brains. In fact, it is like a good workout for the brain. Playing musical instruments enhances the connectivity of different parts of the brain, creating new pathways. It also increases working memory capacity. All of these things can result in an improved IQ. Finally, playing instruments during the childhood years has positive long-lasting effects.
GEOGRAPHY BEE WINNER
What two states border Lake Champlain? Fremantle, Australia lies along what ocean? Mt. Fuji is in what country?
Congratulations to the 2017 School Geography Bee winner, 4th grader, Kate Duffy.
OPEN HOUSEMARCH 2
Please mark your calendars for Open House this Thursday, March 2 from 6-7 pm. This is a great event to come see your child's classroom work and enjoy seeing teachers and friends. The whole family is invited to this "come & go" event. This will be your child’s chance to “show off” his portfolio of work, and it's a great opportunity for you and your child to celebrate the incredible progress he/she is making this year. Remember that at this conference, your child will be the teacher and share what has been learned. Of course, the teachers will be here to answer questions.

There is still time to sign up for the Brinker Color Fun Run on March 17 from 5-6. The t-shirt deadline was February 20, but you can still register to run! The Brinker Color Fun Run is an untimed run where Brinker students are dusted in different shades of green at stations around the lap course. The event is all about students running, walking or even skipping while family members and Brinker community cheer for them. Last year’s run was a fundraiser, but this year’s run is simply an event to bring our Brinker community together to have fun and promote healthy family lifestyles. No pledges to collect and registration is super easy.
Click here and you will see the Color Run Registration.
After logging in, go to Order/Volunteering tab to find Registration form.
The students will be able to count their laps towards the Brinker Marathon Club and will get a green beaded necklace. We hope you and your family can join on St. Patrick's Day for this fun family event!
KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUPMARCH 24
Enrollment for 2017-18 Kindergarten students will take place on March 24 from 9-11 am & 1-3 pm. Getting an accurate number of students is very important in helping us plan for the number of classes and teachers we will need. Each child will need immunization records signed by a doctor, certified birth certificate, child’s social security card, if available, proof of residency (current gas or electric bill or lease agreement) and parent’s driver’s license in order to register. WE NEED V.I.P. TUTORS
Brinker would like to invite you to become a Very Important Partner (VIP) Tutor. VIP tutoring is an opportunity to work one-on-one with a Brinker student who needs a little extra help in math and/or reading. It’s a great way to give back to the Brinker community and meet some wonderful kids. No formal teaching experience is required. We just ask that you complete a background check, and make a commitment of 30 minutes per week on a day/time of your choosing. If you work close by, please consider coming in during your lunch hour. This is also a great opportunity for grandparents to get involved at Brinker. I will meet with you prior to you starting tutoring to show you where the VIP tutoring supplies are, and how the half hour of tutoring works. There are only about ten weeks left of VIP tutoring for this school year. The VIP program for this school year ends April 28.
More students are identified as needing extra help in the second semester. Right now, we do not have enough volunteers for the number of students needing extra support. The need is great and our teachers welcome the extra help. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Jennifer Blice at VIPtutors@brinkerpta.org.
