We made it through the first week of school! As I walked my fourth grader, Jack, into Brinker this week (for the one day he would tolerate it), I remembered when my now Renner 7th grader, Payton, started Kindergarten at Brinker. Being at a new school with tons of families I didn’t know, not being aware of the school procedures for parents and the students and having an extremely shy child clinging to me was so stressful and overwhelming. I can truly relate to how our many new families must feel right now.
Well, great news! Your family is at Brinker Elementary, a wonderful school, with amazing and caring teachers and staff and an AWESOME Brinker PTA ready to welcome and support you and your child along this new educational journey. We want you to feel a part of our Brinker community. Please let the Brinker PTA help you ease some of the stress of a new school by keeping you constantly informed, answering your questions and introducing you to other families who will be dear friends and the support you need during your years at Brinker Elementary. And to our “seasoned” Brinker families, please show your “Brinker Spirit” and reach out and show everyone how awesome our Brinker community is.
We have a jam-packed calendar of Brinker PTA-sponsored events, activities and programs, so join us and have a great school year.
We wanted to give a huge thank you to our Brinker Boy Scouts who worked hard to plant all of our outside planters full of colorful flowers. We appreciate their time on this service project to beautify Brinker!

GRADE LEVEL & HOMEROOMREPRESENTATIVES NEEDED
Do you want to support your child’s teacher and be involved without a huge time commitment? If so, then Homeroom Representative is for you! Homeroom Representatives help plan and coordinate two classroom parties throughout the year and help support the teacher in securing volunteers and classroom donations when needed.
If you can count to 28, use a paper cutter, tear out pages from a workbook and staple, then the Brinker Workroom needs you! We need at least 4-5 volunteers each week to help our teachers with behind the scenes work. This time will be spent on work assignments and projects for all grade levels, including PACE and Special Education.
All instructions and supplies are provided. The Brinker Workroom is located inside the library and is available each week, Tuesday through Friday (7:30am-2:45pm). There will be Workroom training on September 7th in the morning @ 10:15am and one in the afternoon at 2pm in the Brinker Workroom which is located inside the library for anyone who is interested to volunteer. To volunteer, go to the Orders/Volunteering tab on the PTAMembership Toolkitand look for the Teacher Workroom volunteer form.
This is a great opportunity to see what our children are learning and give a helping hand to our wonderful teachers! If you have any questions, please contact Hema Kalyandurg or Cherline Pierre at email@example.com.

Brinker would like to invite you to become a Very Important Partner (V.I.P.) Tutor. V.I.P. tutoring is an opportunity to work one-on-one with a Brinker student who needs a little extra help in math or reading. It’s a great way to give back to the Brinker community and meet some wonderful kids. No formal teaching experience is required. We just ask that you complete a background check, attend a one hour training session this fall, and make a commitment of 30 minutes per week on a day/time of your choosing. If you work close by, please consider coming in during your lunch hour. This is also a great opportunity for grandparents to get involved at Brinker.
Becoming a V.I.P. volunteer is a very rewarding way to be part of the Brinker community. The need is great and our teachers welcome the extra help. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Jennifer Blice atVIPtutors@brinkerpta.org.
(Benefactors for Educators, Academic Resources and Students)
Each year, your PTA raises money to support programs that directly impact each and every student at Brinker Elementary. Brinker PTA spends almost $20,000 annually on Arts in Education curriculum & Academic Enrichment Programs, such as author visits, field trips, and professional scientists conducting in-classroom experiments. Donations can be made in any amount. Families who donate $100 to $249 will receive a Brinker yard sign and families donating more than $250 will receive a yard sign and the PTA will donate 5 books to the library in that family's name.
Donations can be made on the PTA Membership Toolkit by logging in, going to the Orders/Volunteering tab and selecting the 2015-2016 BEARS Campaign form.
Our goal this year is to get support for our PTA programs from 100% of our Brinker families. No donation is too small. What does the 100% campaign mean?
*100% participation from Brinker families
*100% of your money goes straight to Brinker PTA, therefore straight to your child
More than 1,000 companies in the U.S. have matching gift programs. This means if the employee makes a donation to a charitable 501(c)(3) organization, such as Brinker PTA, the employer will match that donation. This can dramatically increase the impact your gift makes for the Brinker PTA.
Check with your company’s Human Resources Department to see if your company offers this benefit. For more information on matching gifts, visit our BEARS Campaign page.

TEXAS PTA LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Texas PTA Speaks Out for Stronger Cyberbullying Laws
Supports David’s Law
AUSTIN– Today Texas PTA joined Senator Jose Menendez, D-San Antonio, the family of David Molak, a young San Antonio teen who committed suicide after severe cyberbullying, and the Vasquez family whose son Matt, suffering from Leukemia, was horrifically cyberbullied and encouraged to commit suicide, to urge the legislature to take up and pass legislation in the 85th Session of the Texas Legislature to strengthen bullying laws to include cyberbullying.
Texas PTA has long worked to provide bullying prevention education to parents and students and has partnered with Senator Menendez and other legislators to strengthen bullying laws since 2011.
“While the 2011 legislation was a step in the right direction, five years later the use of cell phones, iPads, and laptops and easy access to the Internet is commonplace and often necessary on middle school and high school campuses. The time has come to clarify the responsibilities of school officials and others in dealing with cyberbullying and to strengthen the law so that working together parents, teachers, school officials and others can effectively deal with serious episodes of cyberbullying,” shared Kyle Ward, Executive Director of Texas PTA.
“Yesterday and today students returned to school. The Molak’s son did not. Because of cyberbullying, he will never have the opportunity to walk across the stage to receive his high school diploma, attend college or follow his life dreams. This is tragic, unacceptable, senseless – and preventable. In Texas PTA our tagline is “Back the Future”. For the Vasquez family, it’s hard to think about the future when your child has been severely victimized by cyberbullying for having a disease and then told he should kill himself. It is sickening and disgusting that anyone would ever utter such words to a student. Texas PTA will work diligently with Senator Menendez and others to strengthen the bullying law in 2017,” added Ward.
Texas PTA is the largest child advocacy organization in Texas with half a million members - parents, teachers and others who have a special interest in children, youth, families and schools. Texas PTA is a noncommercial, nonsectarian-nonpartisan organization that does not endorse any candidate or political party. For more information on Texas PTA, visit www.txpta.org or contact the state office at 800-TALK-PTA.
