Sweet April showers do spring May flowers. -Thomas Tusser
After so much rain this quote is so true, I can't complain about it being cold and rainy one day and sunny and gorgeous the next. In no time it will be summer (yippee) and we will be complaining about the heat.
I can't believe it, but we have five more weeks of school. I know I have said it before, but this year has gone by so fast! We have so many fun events happening in May. We kick off the month with "Teacher Appreciation" week, May 4-8. Our teachers and staff work so hard to make our school a wonderful learning environment for our kids, this is our way of saying thank you!! The week of May 18-22 will be Art week and Mr. G has some fantastic ideas to do canvas painting with acrylics.
Enjoy these last five weeks, summer will be here in no time!!!
Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school. - Albert Einstein
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH: WATCHDOGS
Congratulations to all of our WatchDOGS, our Volunteers of the Month for May! The WatchDOGS program is one of the students' favorite PTA-sponsored programs. They love it when the dads (and grandfathers and uncles) spend the day with them at school, opening cars at morning car pool, guiding students around the building and helping the teachers with various activities throughout the day. Thank you to all of the WatchDOGS who make this program such a great success!

MAY 4 - 8
CELEBRATE OUR TEACHERS AND STAFF!
May 4 - 8 is National Teacher Appreciation Week! To remind our teachers AND staff how much we appreciate all they do for our students, the PTA has planned and organized the following special events:
May 5: Casserole Day - Parent volunteers have purchased casserole dinners prepared and packaged by Central Market for our teachers and staff to take home to their families.
May 7: Staff Luncheon - Parent volunteers are donating a variety of food items for a delicious all-staff luncheon.
May 8: Dessert Day - You guessed it! Parent volunteers are once again providing a large variety of desserts to be enjoyed throughout the day by our very favorite teachers and staff.
Our Hospitality Chairperson, Tamie Burnett, and the PTA extend a very sincere thank you to all of the families who are donating food items and making casserole purchases to make this week such a great success.
BRINKER SENIORS RECEPTION
Each year, we celebrate our former Brinker students who are are now headed off to college. On Wednesday, May 13, we will be hosting our annual Graduating Seniors Reception in the Brinker Library from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.
We invite all graduating seniors who attended Brinker to come catch up with old friends and teachers and share the news of where you are headed off to next. Wear your college t-shirt or sweat shirt and brag about your new alma mater. And don't forget your cameras!
If you know of any graduating seniors who attended Brinker, please pass this notice to them and make sure they know they are invited to attend!
The week of May 18-22 Brinker students will be getting the opportunity to create their very own acrylic painting on canvas during their Art class with Mr. Grundler and Ms. Medler. Mr. Grundler has planned a week focused on painting with acrylics for all the students in line with curriculum and the new TEKs. Canvas and paint supplies will be provided b the PTA.
To make this week a success, we will need parent volunteers to assist in the classes throughout the week. Be on the lookout soon for additional details on how to sign up.
We can’t wait to see what our artistic Brinker Bears create!!
SCHOOL IS "IN"
Mark your calendars. This date was designated as a "bad weather make-up day." Due to the numerous ice days when school was forced to cancel, students now MUST ATTEND school on this date.
No school on this holiday. Let's remember the reason for this day off from school and work by paying tribute to our fallen service members in your own special way.
The last PTA General Membership Meeting of the year will be held on Wednesday, May 27, at 12:30 in the Brinker Gym. Please join us as we wrap up business for the 2014-15 school year. Immediately after, we will all be treated by the annual 4th Grade Talent Show.
5th GRADE RECOGNITION CEREMONY
5th grade parents: the time is here! Families are invited to attend the 5th Grade Recognition Ceremony on Wednesday, June 3, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the Plano West Senior High Auditorium. On Friday, June 5, our Brinker Bears will be celebrate their last day of school with music, dancing, games and a special treat from Rita's Italian Ice. Please join us in celebrating a fantastic school year and the official start of summer!
We will need volunteers to assist with games and passing out frozen treats. Be on the lookout for details on how to sign up. (All volunteers must be approved through the district background checks system, so please submit your application if you are not already approved.)
All Brinker 5th grade students are invited to attend a pool party on the last day of school from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center. The Center will be closed to the public during this time and only 5th grade students of Brinker will be able to attend. No siblings please.
This is a private pool party hosted by 5th grade parents. (This party is not sponsored by the school nor by the PTA.) It promises to be full of swimming, food, and fun! Parents/guardians will be required to sign their children in and out of the party.
We are happy to report what a successful year it has been environmentally for Brinker! Several projects were started and there are more in the works. Brinker had a very successful event to donate items to the Texas Little Cuties animal shelter. The goal was to donate items that could be kept out of landfills, such as old towels, blankets and dog toys that the shelter could use instead of simply disposing of them. The response was very positive.
Brinker PTA also hosted our first Recycled Art contest where students submitted art work made out of entirely recycled materials. The entries were fantastic! We had a city and a recycling facility made out of recycled materials, a working hour glass, a model of a rocket ship and several other outstanding, creative pieces of art!! We hope this contest gets bigger and better over the upcoming years. The pieces are on display in the library right now.
Our next project is in cooperation with World Wear Project. A bin has been placed behind the school where you can drop off gently used clothing and shoes. Brinker PTA will be paid by the pound for donated items while World Wear will send the clothes out to other organizations that can use them. It is a great way to keep items out of landfills, allow others to use them, and earn money to support PTA projects at Brinker.
Our project to continue for next year is a campus garden. It will be a larger, more involved undertaking that will require more money, research and time to implement. We hope to continue toward the goal of creating a garden for students to use, enjoy, learn about science and enhance the beauty of our campus.
