"Not what we say about our blessings but how we use them is the true measure of our Thanksgiving". - W.T. Purkiser
I can't believe it's already November! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year because it is all about giving thanks for all of our wonderful blessings. I know we are all looking forward to having the entire week off to enjoy with your family and friends.
Thank you to all that attended the Brinker Family Picnic. We had such a good turnout and the kids had a great time, not to mention the yummy Cane's food. The kids and teachers also had a wonderful time at Field Day. We could not have asked for a more picture perfect day. Thank you so much to all the volunteers that worked so hard to make this a success!!
November will be a short month for us, but not short on activities. We will have Book Fair - always a fun event - that will take place November 10-14th. We hope you will join us for Family Book fair night on Wednesday, November 12th; more information to follow on this event. A big hit at lunchtime is Cafeteria Cops, happening on Tuesday, November 18th. Make sure to ask your kids about this after school. And the highlight event, if you are in fifth grade, is 5th grade Adventure camp! The fifth graders look forward to this every year and this year will be off to camp from November 19-21st. Brinker will be a little quieter those three days that they are gone.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoys your time off!
"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." - John Fitzgerald Kennedy

TEXAS PTA LIFETIME NOMINATIONS DUE
At Brinker, we are very fortunate to have the tremendous support of volunteers and an extremely dedicated faculty. There are many deserving individuals serving and helping our students.
One of the ways we recognize individuals for their dedication to children and the community is through the Texas PTA Lifetime Membership. It is one of the highest honors presented to individuals for outstanding service to children and youth.
If you would like to nominate someone to receive this honor, please fill out the Texas PTA Lifetime Nomination Form (found here) and return it to the school office in a sealed envelope to the attention of Hollie Carlson by November 20. Forms may also be emailed to email@example.com.
Thank you for taking the time to recognize a deserving individual's efforts!

READING BUDDIES TRAINING
Reading Buddies is a PTA-sponsored program where parent volunteers help our Kindergarten students advance their reading skills. Volunteer opportunities are available during the school day at assigned times for each of the Kindergarten teachers. Parents can volunteer for one date or many.
This year's Reading Buddies Volunteer Training will be held on Tuesday, November 18, at 9:45 am at Brinker.
Brinker would like to invite you to become a Very Important Partner (VIP) Tutor. VIP tutoring is an opportunity to work one-on-one with a Brinker student who needs a little extra help in math or reading. It’s a great way to give back to the Brinker community and meet some wonderful kids. No formal teaching experience is required. We just ask that you complete a background check, attend a one hour training session and make a commitment of 30 minutes per week on a day/ time of your choosing. If you work close to the school, please consider coming in during your lunch hour. This is also a great opportunity for grandparents to get involved at Brinker.
Please consider volunteering. The need is great and our teachers welcome the extra help. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Barbara Wisler atVIPtutors@brinkerpta.org.
2014-15 Brinker Family Directories are here!
Directories were sent home with students the week of October 27. Only PTA Members are eligible to receive a Brinker Directory. If you are a PTA Member and you did not receive your directory, please email@example.com. It’s not too late to join the PTA and receive a copy of this year’s directory. Join today using our Membership Toolkit.
PWSH INTRO TO LACROSSE
Plano West Lacrosse's Head Coach Hartzell and Cradle Lacrosse are holding an Introduction to Lacrosse program that begins on Saturday, November 8th and runs for six weeks. This structured, one-hour session each week exposes new-to-the game players to the fundamentals of lacrosse through highly-active games and activities while also keeping little ones on the go! There is a small fee for the six program but no equipment is needed! They provide the sticks, squishy/tennis balls, and any necessary equipment.
If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Kim Brown at 214-280-6838 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
On November 15, the city of Plano hosts Texas Recycles Day. The event will take place int he parking lot of Chase Oaks Church at 281 Legacy Dr. from 9 a.m. until noon. This is a fantastic way to clean out your closets before the holiday season begins and give unwanted items new life. Items accepted include bicycles, smart phones, books, clothing, eye glasses, pet products, blankets and more.
There will also be a compost fair. Pre-registration is required for this event. The New Leash on Life Mobile Animal Shelter will be in attendance as well. If you have documents you need to shred, this service will be provided. It is a two box limit per household. Another fun opportunity is getting to operate a recycling truck!!
The best part of all of this is that it is free. If you need more information, please call Melinda Haggerty at (972) 941-5294.
Until next month, Jennifer Blice and Nanditha Zuckerman
Studies have shown that children's physical well-being has a significant effect on their learning and long-term success. When children are well-nourished and physically fit, they are more ready to learn.
Brinker PTA's Healthy Lifestyles will support good nutrition and physical activity at school and at home. Keep your eyes open for programs and monthly tips that promote healthy lifestyles.
This Month's Tip:Make Exercise a Family Habit
Take a family walk around the block each night after dinner.
Walk instead of driving when you can.
Walk or bike with your child to school.
Park as far away from entrances as possible.
Use the stairs instead of elevators and escalators.
This Month's Challenge: Have a discussion with your children about Red Ribbon Week!
The Red Ribbon Campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation. During the week of 10/27-10/31, Brinker Elementary celebrated Red Ribbon Week. Students participated in a fun assembly, daily themes, and age-appropriate discussions to encourage good choices. Make sure to talk to your children about Red Ribbon Week, the things they learned, and the good choices you would like to them to make!
The Brinker PTA has been awarded the Texas PTA Gold Award for the 2013-14 school year. Websites are submitted for evaluation by the Texas PTA and awards given to those schools for outstanding communication efforts to the school community. BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Rhonda Snyder, Brinker PTA's Vice President of Communications and Webmaster for the 2013-14 school year and Kim Gleason, PTA President for 2013-14.
The Brinker PTA and our Brinker Bears enjoyed a BUSY October....
Our Fall Picnic was a huge success. Thanks to all of the families who came out for good food from Canes, our annual pumpkin patch, and fun and games for the kids.
Red Ribbon Week drug prevention program kicked off with the very funny and talented ventriloquist, Nancy Burks Worcester. Nancy and her friends were HILARIOUS and brought to life the importance of making good choices even at a young age. All Brinker students found her storytelling and entertainment REALLY REALLY FUNNY... be sure to ask your child about it! Thank you for supporting the PTA! Your membership and donations allowed us to bring Nancy and her FUN message to our school!
Field Day was partnered by some perfect fall weather. The students enjoyed their favorite field day games in a larger area due to the renovation expansion. Many thanks to the nearly 100 parents who volunteered to make this fun day possible for our Bears.
The month concluded with the ever-popular 5th Grade Colonial Day. Students dressed in colonial area clothing for the day and learned how to make applesauce from scratch, how to knit, punch tin, how to write with wood nib pins and ink, what school classes were like and what kinds of toys and games colonial children played. Again, this educational and fun day could not be possible without all of the parent - and grandparent! - volunteers who donated their time and supplies to make the day happen.
