This is my Favorite time of year for a variety of reasons - Fantastic weather, Football, Fall Family Picnic and Field Day!! The Fall Family picnic will take place on Friday October 10th from 5-8pm. This wonderful event is an annual tradition sponsored by the Brinker PTA. This year we will be offering Cane's for purchase for your picnic dinner. Nothing says "picnic" like chicken fingers from Cane's and a cold glass of lemonade. In addition we will have face painting, tattoos, bounce houses, climbing walls and a DJ playing some great music! We started a new tradition last year with the Brinker Pumpkin Patch. We will be selling pumpkins again this year so please come by and grab a pumpkin for your doorstep. We encourage families to bring a blanket and enjoy this wonderful evening.
At the end of the month all students will take part in Field Day on October 24th. This is a fun event and the kids have a great time. It's also a great volunteering opportunity to interact with your children. We need a lot of volunteers to make this a success for the kids, so please sign up.
This has been a great start to the school year. We had a wonderful chance to meet many of our new families at the Brinker Newcomers Coffee. Thank you to everyone who has joined the PTA; this is what makes our school a success!!
I look forward to seeing all of you at the Fall Family picnic!!!
VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to Candice Leinart and Jennifer Thompson, our Volunteers of the Month! As the Brinker Spirit Wear Coordinators, they worked hard over the summer to decide on the perfect designs for this year's spirit wear and have all of the new items ready for distribution at Back to Brinker. A special thank you also to Candice who was a huge help during New Student Registration. Jennifer has Brinker 1st and 5th graders and Candice has a 1st grader at Brinker. Thank you Candice and Jennifer!
OCTOBER PTA EVENTS
INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY
International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record breaking participation – each October. Today, thousands of schools across America – from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico – participate every October. Be sure to mark your calendars and participate in the fun!

2014-2015 PTA Fundraiser - B.E.A.R.S. Campaign
GET YOUR BRINKER YARD SIGN BY OCTOBER 10!
Who: You! (Because you have a child that attends Brinker Elementary that will directly benefit from the money raised by the Brinker PTA)
What: B.E.A.R.S Campaign (Benefactors for Educators, Academic Resources and Students)This will replace the “traditional product sales” fundraiser.
Where:Online through brinkerpta.org or the Brinker PTA dropbox in the office.
Why: Each year the Brinker PTA spends roughly $20,000 on our students. The B.E.A.R.S. Campaign allows 100% of our money to go directly to the students rather than splitting the money with a product sales company. The PTA pays for author visits, scientists in the classroom, the Fall Family Picnic, the Brinker Bash Party, certain field trips and transportation to those field trips, assemblies, art projects, History reenactments, agendas for every student at Brinker and MORE!!
When: Donations of $100 or more given on or before October 10th, 2014 will receive the 2014-2015 version of the Brinker Yard Sign! (However, donations can be made all year long.)
Please consider volunteering for this fun outdoor day for our Brinker Bears! We need 100 volunteers to help run the games and coordinate the students.
ONLINE SHIFT SIGN-UP IS NOW OPEN! Please visit your Brinker PTA Membership Toolkit account to sign up. If you are a returning user, simply go to your existing account and sign-up for the shift(s) you are available to volunteer. If you are a first time user, signing up is quick and easy. Please note that your account is for your household so there is no need to set up a separate account for each adult.
Field Day will take place in two shifts:
8-11 am (Kindergarten-2nd grade) 11 am-2 pm (3rd grade-5th grade)
To keep our children safe, all volunteers must be SECURITY CLEARED! If you do not have security clearance, apply NOW as the clearance takes 2-4 weeks to process. Please note that only those who have been security cleared by PISD may attend Field Day, even as a spectator. You can access the PISD security clearance application here.
Volunteers will need to check in at the volunteer table and wear a RED shirt on the day of the event.
Please contact Amy Matz and Jamie Lamb at email@example.com with any questions. In the event of a rain out, the make-up date for Field Day is October 28.
We are thrilled that one of this school year’s Bluebonnet authors, Polly Holyoke, will be presenting to the Brinker 3rd-5th graders on Wednesday, October 22nd. She is the author of “The Neptune Project.” She’ll be reading and discussing the book, as well as answering questions.
Ms. Holyoke released the book in the UK as “The Neptune Conspiracy.” She has been nominated for the Maryland Black-eyed Susan award. You can learn more about her at her website:www.pollyholyoke.com.
Your child may bring in a copy of the Bluebonnet book with them if they would like to have it autographed.
Thank you for supporting our school! Together we can make a big difference. Keep clipping Box Tops and send them to school before the fall submission deadline - October 24.
You or your child can turn in your Box Tops at the front office in the pink box with the words "BOX TOPS" on the side. If possible, please bundle them in small ziploc bags with 50 box tops in each bag.
Please don't be shy about asking grandparents, aunts and uncles to clip Box Tops for you. Every box top counts and is money earned directly for our school.
The Red Ribbon Campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation. The PTA is excited to kick-off Red Ribbon week by bringing the lovely and talented ventriloquist, Nancy Burks Worcester, to perform at Brinker on Monday, October 27th.
Nancy is sure to delight as she brings to life the 'be drug free' message with storytelling and entertainment that all students will find REALLY REALLY FUNNY!
Thank you for supporting the PTA! Your membership and donations have allowed us to bring Nancy and her FUN message to our school!
5th GRADE COLONIAL DAY
Each year at Brinker, our 5th Graders get to experience the essence of American Colonial Life on Colonial Day. This is a student favorite each year. Both the children and our wonderful volunteers dress in Colonial-style attire and learn about different facets of Colonial life, including cooking, school, home life, crafting, and playtime. This year, 5th graders will be celebrating this fun Brinker tradition on Friday, October 31st. This day is absolutely not possible without all of our volunteers. To volunteer, log on using your Membership Toolkit accountand look for the Colonial Day Volunteer Form. For more information, contact one of the 5th Grade Co-Lead Homeroom Representatives, Jill Zacha at firstname.lastname@example.org or Amy Young at email@example.com.

PARENTS - WE NEED YOU!
Brinker would like to invite you to become a Very Important Partner (VIP) Tutor. VIP tutoring is an opportunity to work one-on-one with a Brinker student who needs a little extra help in math or reading. It’s a great way to give back to the Brinker community and meet some wonderful kids. No formal teaching experience is required. We just ask that you complete a background check, attend a one hour training session and make a commitment of 30 minutes per week on a day/ time of your choosing. If you work close to the school, please consider coming in during your lunch hour. This is also a great opportunity for grandparents to get involved at Brinker.
Please consider volunteering. The need is great and our teachers welcome the extra help. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Barbara Wisler atVIPtutors@brinkerpta.org.
Do you ever wonder how others know the birthdays of their child's teacher?
Do you want to get a thank you gift that your child's teacher will really love?
Do you wonder what the teachers' interests and hobbies are?
We can help. Go to the Hospitality page of our PTA website and click on the Staff Favorites Link. Our teachers are always thrilled to receive tokens of appreciation!

November 2 is the date we turn our clocks back one hour and the recommended time to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. And so we focus on recycling batteries this month. Here are some types and proper ways to dispose of them.
Alkaline batteries are the cylinder shaped batteries used in flashlights and toys. They have been much safer since 1992. Wrap them in a plastic bag and dispose of them with your regular garbage. There are some businesses that will recycle them, but none available to the general public.
Rechargeable batteries are found in cell phones, tools, and some toys. These batteries contain heavy metals such as nickel, cadmium, lithium and lead, all of which are quite toxic. All City of Plano libraries have collection boxes for these batteries. You can also look towww.call2recycle.org, enter your zip code on the site and find nearby places that will take your batteries. There are many options in our Brinker neighborhood for recycling these batteries and phones.
Lead-Acid Batteries used in motor vehicles can be recycled as well. Simply call and schedule a Household Chemical Collection date with the Plano Environmental Waste Services Customer Service at 972-769-4150.
